Snow Day

Finally, some snow in North Carolina! Even a dusting makes things more interesting. Here's NS 213 coasting downgrade towards Jamestown.
As usual, an inch of snow brings the entire city to a halt. Even the Piedmont is running an hour and a half late this morning.

A Morning on the Danville District

Here is a short video I shot on Dec 23, 2008 of what is most likely NS 213 on the approach to Aycock followed by a northbound unit gon train. Next we have Amtrak 80 at the Hilltop Rd. crossing then 213 again, this time climbing the grade south from CP Cox.

Sometimes cloudy days are good for train photography. This angle has a nasty backlighting to it when the sun is out, so I like to come here when it's not. Telephoto enhances the grade leading south from CP Cox to the new bridge that crosses I-40. NS 159 follows the double track project that is underway for a 10 mile section between CP Cox and Hoskins. The idea is to ease congestion around Pomona Yard and the K and H lines that terminate there.

Rare Leader

I remember seeing these brand new in 1993. The SD70 was all the rage with it's high-adhesion, self steering trucks and 4000 hp 16 cylinder engine. Rarely do you see these leading an intermodal; the preference is a wide cab locomotive for safety and comfort. NS 2519 leads 213 south at the Hilltop DD.

This is where it all started for me. This now closed grade crossing on the south end of Charlotte Yard was where my dad and I would go to watch trains 20 years ago. Many rolls of film were exposed here and some great images were captured. One of my favorites is a simple wedge shot of a then common seven engine consist leading a train south out of town. On the point was NS GP40X 7001 and 7000, two of three built by EMD in June of 1978. I didn't realize at the time that this would be the greatest lashup of engines I would see here. The rest of the consist was NS GP50 7092, NS SD40-2 3310, NS GP59 4608, SOU B30-7A1 3513 and NS GP49 4603.

With the recession in full swing it was nice to see a long stack train today. Most of the intermodals over the last month have been very short, some only 20 cars long. NS 213 is a daily southbound that runs from Rutherford, PA to termination at Inman Yard in Atlanta, GA. Above is today's run seen in High Point, NC approaching CP Hoskins.

The Piedmont serves North Carolina with a Raleigh-Charlotte and return daily run. The equipment is owned by the North Carolina Department of Transportation and runs with Amtrak symbols 73 and 74. Engines are numbered after significant years in NC history including 1755, 1768, 1792 and 1797. They are also named after the city founded in that year. The rolling stock are named after state symbols. The roster includes 2 F59PHI's and 2 rebuilt GP40H-2's.
